Holy Days of Obligation

Book of the GospelsThe following is a list of Holy Days of Obligation compiled by our archdiocesan Office of Worship. The designation of Holy Days of Obligation varies from country to country, and there are even variations within the U.S.

1. The Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, January 1, is a day of obligation unless it falls on a Saturday or a Monday.

2. The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, August 15, is a day of obligation unless it falls on a Saturday or a Monday.

3. The Solemnity of All Saints, November 1, is a day of obligation unless it falls on a Saturday or a Monday.

4. Since it is the patronal feast of the United States, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, celebrated on December 8, is always a day of obligation. (When December 8 is a Sunday of Advent, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is moved to Monday, December 9, and the obligation remains.)

5. Christmas, December 25, is always a holy day of obligation.

(In most regions of the U.S. including Indiana, the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord is celebrated on the Seventh Sunday of Easter. In those few regions in which it is still celebrated on the previous Thursday, it is a day of obligation.)
